New Curriculum for MFL

At Brampton we are following the new curriculum for MFL.
Key stage 2: Foreign language

Pupils should be taught to:

  • listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding
  • explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words
  • engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help*
  • speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures
  • develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases*
  • present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences*
  • read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language
  • broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary
  • write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly
  • describe people, places, things and actions orally* and in writing

Spanish assessment is done by considering the overall performance of the pupils in the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and it is used to inform planning and improve teaching and learning. Pupil’s performance will tell us whether they are working at age-related expectations. Examples of methods include:

  • daily oral interviews
  • reading in class
  • written work in books
  • club work
  • homework
  • end of the topic mini-tests (following the Spanish system)
  • achievement target sheet

International Work

This year we are going to be working on different eTwinning Projects. We have already taken part in two eTwinning projects to celebrate European Day of Languages. We exchanged cards with European schools and we made flags with information and pictures from our own countries.
The messages were in English and the language of each participant country.

eTwinning NAT: nuestra amiga la tierra (Spain, Italy and France)
This is a project in Spanish to learn about and promote the conservation of the environment. Children worked in mixed groups about different aspects related to the environment both in school and at home. Children discussed and agreed on measures that need to be taken in order to help our environment. The final outcome of this project was the creation of an environment Decalogue.

We have been awarded a Quality Label for this project.

eTwinning Project: across the Mediterranean to Londinium (Spain, Italy, Greece) The main aim of this project is to reflect about the legacy of the ancient Mediterranean cultures focussing on food and sport and how to promote the best healthy life styles.

eTwinning Creative Club: (Greece, Portugal, Romania, France, Poland, Armenia)
The main aim of this project was to create opportunities for children to write in a more creative and imaginative way whilst learning about each other’s cultures. Some of the activities planned by our Greek coordinator included writing a story together, exchanging famous paintings and writing a story about them or writing a poem together. This project also allowed us to create our own parallel stories and to even act out our part. Children really enjoyed this project and all the books and stories that all participant children wrote.

We have been awarded a Creative Writing Quality Label for this project.

eTwinning Project:“Let’s C.R.A.F.T. (Create Resourceful Amazing Fabulous Things)"

We introduced our school using different tools, we made Autumn crafts and exchanged Christmas cards with our partners in Greece, Spain, Turkey and Croatia.

We followed the adventures of our main character Hope across all the participant countries and we wrote a collaborative story. From each country she collected a precious gift. This is our pop-up book with all the stories from the different countries she visited.
